One Return and One New Casting

One of these has been rumored for months. The other popped up out of nowhere yesterday and was confirmed today. Take a peek behind the cut to find out…

Louise Sorel (Vivian Alamain) is apparently on her way back to Salem. Earlier today, former One Life to Live star Robin Strasser — a friend of Sorel’s — tweeted this:

Later in the day, she apologized but didn’t retract her announcement. And not long afterward, a now-deleted video posted on social media from the Days make-up room showed this:

Who’s that over Billy Flynn’s shoulder? Yep, Louise Sorel. And now various news sites, including TV Line, are confirming it. We have no word yet on when Vivian will reappear or how long-term an engagement this is, but if she started filming recently, it seems likely that she’ll show up in January. Sorel first appeared as Vivian in 1992 and played the part until 1999; she showed up again in 2009, a return that was initially exciting

There’s another bit of news hidden in that picture. Next to Sorel is Tyler Christopher, who played Nikolas Cassadine on General Hospital for years and years before departing last year. Based on various bits of internet sleuthing — Twitter follows, remarks in interviews, etc. — it’s been speculated for months that Christopher had been cast on Days. There is still no official confirmation, but his appearance in the make-up room on a shooting day certainly lends major credence to the theory.

We still have no idea who he might be playing, aside from speculation, which has resulted in the bandying-about of all kinds of character names. Let’s break down the likelihood of a few of ’em:

  • Philip Kiriakis: He feels all wrong for this role, looks-wise, and also reads (to me) a little older than Nadia Bjorlin, Brandon Beemer, and Martha Madison. Doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen, but I’m not sure I can see Christopher as a fit for Philip.
  • EJ DiMera: Rumors have been swirling about potential EJ recasts forever, especially with Sami, Kristen, and Will all on the way back. Tyler Christopher played the scion of the rich Cassadine family on GH, but he never felt… sophisticated to me in the way that EJ is supposed to feel. And he has a distinctly American accent. Maybe he’ll learn to do an English one (eek). Maybe they’ll just play EJ as American (ugh). I don’t really see this one, either.
  • Alexander Kiriakis: The son of Anjelica and Justin (raised by Adrienne) is basically a blank slate. Tyler Christopher (born 1972) comes off a little young to be the son of Wally Kurth (born 1958), but looking at those numbers, way more insane things have happened. Unless he shows up relatively soon, it’d be strange to bring on Alexander after Anjelica’s short-term run wraps up, meaning they’d never share scenes, but who the hell knows? I could see Alexander being useful on the canvas…
  • Nicholas Alamain: This name only recently came up, but it might make even more sense in light of Vivian’s return. Carly and Lawrence’s son — who was originally raised/kidnapped by Vivian — showed up majorly SORASed in 1999, had a flirtation with Kate, and then disappeared for another 12 years before showing up in his early-to-mid-20s to make a brief appearance to visit Carly in rehab. Christopher would be much more in line with Nicholas’s late 90s age, but it doesn’t really screw up anything that happened during his quick 2011 stint, and the character’s adult life   and personality can sort of be whatever they’d want it to be.
  • Quinn Hudson: Gonna preface this one with a big, fat BLEH. This Australian pimp who turned out to be Vivian’s long-lost son was one of the lazier and more egregious retcon kids I’ve ever seen. The actor, Bren Foster, was actually kind of appealing, but they didn’t have much idea what to do with him. In a few short months, he worked with Kate to blackmail Chloe into prostitution, ran into Vivian and started to establish a relationship with her, showed Carly compassion during her addiction, romanced Taylor (a prostitute he’d formerly pimped out!) and left town with her, and then returned a few months later to open a day spa/gym before vanishing again. All the pimp stuff was gross enough, but what really did him in for me was that Vivian — who had completely obsessed over Lawrence, Nicholas, and Philip as pseudo-sons — allegedly had a child by some Australian man and allowed herself to be bullied into never seeing said son. This lunatic buried two people alive to suit her own purposes! Even worse, they never even made a point in dialogue that Vivian had done all this insane shit because she’d been kept from her son. It was all so poorly executed, and I have no interest in seeing Quinn again unless they were to do some maaaaaajor clean-up of their backstory. Even better, I’d love to see Vivian show up and reveal that she’d been swindled and Quinn was never her son and then do interesting things with actual existing characters.

…he’s probably Quinn, huh?

UPDATE: Tyler Christopher’s casting is now confirmed. From TV Line:

Christopher is said to have begun filming last week, with his on-screen debut not expected before the end of the year or early 2018.

Still no announcement of who he’ll be playing, though.

  1. Fluffysmom Says:

I’d like to see him playing Nicholas Alamain or maybe Alexander Kiriakis. I never want to see Quinn again.

I’ve been a fan of Louise Sorel since she played Augusta Lockridge on Santa Barbara in the 80’s.

  2. Shea Says:

I too have loved Louise Sorel since she was on Santa Barbara and she was a lot of fun as Vivian but I just hope this doesn’t lead to a return for Lawrence or Carly…..these two are my least favorite Days characters EVER!

The hiring of Tyler Christopher is very intriguing to me. Obviously he has bounced on and off of GH multiple times over the years and I have been a GH viewer on and off for many years. He CAN be an AMAZING actor but it seems like he starts getting bored with the material and starts to phone it in. It’s really been a constant cycle on GH. I just hope that he delivers no matter who he is playing. And it would be fun seeing him work with SN and MBE again. Mary Beth must have had fun during her time on GH…she got to blackmail Ned (Wally Kurth) into marrying her, have a romance with Stefan (Stephen Nichols) and shoot him, seduce Nikolas (Tyker Christopher) and faked a pregnancy to get him to marry her.

The former GH actor that I would LOVE to see hired by Days is Brandon Barash. (He’s 37 and he is Kristen Storm’s ex-husband.) He is the right age to play Philip but looks too much like Shawn to make that work.

I don’t have the Carly/Lawrence hatred that other people do, but I don’t really feel a need for either one to be around right now. Lawrence briefly haunting Nicholas might be useful, but I think we could get the same value out of people like Jen reminding him of the things his father did.

MBE’s character on GH was so different from Kayla. That must’ve been a blast. I know her run was kind of a mess over there, but she got to be a real catalyst for a while. I’m hoping TC will feel inspired by this new role and really dig in.

I love Brandon Barash! I’ve wanted Days to cast him for a long time. I guess he could’ve been Shawn had they not brought Cook/Beemer back this last go-round. Maybe Alex?

      • Shea Says:

He could definitely play Shawn if they needed one and Alex is a blank slate. At one point I had thought he could play Max if they wanted to bring Max and Chelsea back.

      • mykleraus Says:

Ooh, Max is an interesting idea! BB feels a little… rough for Alex Kiriakis, but I think Max would be an interesting twist on that.

  3. Damon L. Jacobs Says:

I’m voting Nicholas Alamain here. Stealing Christopher from GH and taking him from one “Nicholas” to the other would be another grand middle finger from Carlivati to ABC. Christopher plays rich and pampered well when he gives a crap about the material, so that would play well with Vivian.

It would be kind of weird for Tyler Christopher to be playing Crystal Chappell’s son given he is only 7 years younger than her in real life. But then again, Kassie DePaiva is only 6 years younger than Charles Shaughnessy so we gave up on that making sense a long time ago!

Either way, who wants to bet on him being paired up with Kassie D?

    • mykleraus Says:

He really does seem like a good fit for Nicholas (if you just sort of graze over Nicholas being 25-ish in 2011). I’m not sure I can see TC and KDP together, but it might be interesting. If they go there, it feels a bit like another Jen/Eric, Kristen/Brady, Adrienne/Lucas, Hope/Rafe situation in terms of age — which I don’t mind, but it’s interesting they have so many 50-ish women with 40-ish men. If they hadn’t just put Chabby in such a shitty triangle, I might be interested in Nicholas/Abigail, in theory. Or try him with Chloe!

  4. ADW Says:

I would love to see Alex Kirakis out of sheer curiosity and he would fit in with this arc with Angelica. TC sure looks like passable as a Greek and can pass for a man in his 30s.
Another theory is he could very well be a brand new character with out any blood ties to the major families of Salem. Although I would prefer a strong legacy character, it causes so many limitations, most notably their options love interests.

    • mykleraus Says:

I wouldn’t mind someone without blood ties, as long as he had plausible interesting connections so he wouldn’t be a male Jordan or Serena. One thing that might be interesting is if he appears as a boytoy Vivian picked up somewhere along the way.

  5. ADW Says:

I’m glad Vivian is returning, she cracks me up. I hope she’s utilized better than her last stint.

    • mykleraus Says:

The beginning of Vivian’s 2009 return was REALLY good. She was scary and insane. And her wedding to Victor was absolute gold! After that arc, though, they clearly had no idea what to do with her, as they moved her into Stefano’s orbit (sort of) and she just kept popping up all over the place until she finally left town.
