Thirsty Thursday

Finally, a Salem style trend I can get behind.

If we needed any more proof that Ron Carlivati was officially in control, these scenes — plus Chad keeping his shirt off to argue with Gabi the other day — are it. I really have no idea why all these guys have been fully clothed all the time. Did anyone even take off their shirts on that damn island?!

This entire Tripp/Kayla revenge plot is probably the biggest snooze on the show, partly because it’s happening in such a vacuum. I know lots of people loathe the continued mentions of Ava, but that part, I don’t mind; she sucked, but using her specter as a villain is fine by me, especially since it motivates Tripp in a fairly believable way. I just wish there were… more to this. I want to know more about what medicine means to Kayla and what losing her career would mean. I wish they’d shown us this “Nurse Shelly” a few times earlier in the story so that we’d seen some of these red herrings planted and might actually care if she goes down for framing Kayla. Imagine if Hope really had suffered some adverse effects from Tripp manipulating the charts, and there were an actual board hearing where she had to testify against Kayla. And I get what they’re going for with Steve being Kayla’s hero, but can she be a little proactive in wanting to salvage her career and reputation? She’s just kind of going along with this. Give me some meat here!

I get that they’re basically just re-establishing everything and clarifying motivations and stakes before what I assume is a big blowup coming soon, but… meh. For what this story could be, it’s so limp. I did think the anniversary celebration between Steve and Kayla was well done (and a nice love letter to their longtime fans), but that more or less existed outside this story completely.

Gabi looks cute, though!

With the lipsticks and the mascara brushes, this dress could be corny, and it would be a bit silly on a woman in her 40s or 50s, but I think it works here. Plus it isn’t another skintight, midriff-baring number, so… things are looking up until the next time Nicole befouls our screens!

If I were Nurse Shelly I would have called the cops on Steve/Kayla! Imagine your boss gets fired then shows up with her threatening husband and starts accusing you of murdering a patient. How is that OK? Then again all the police are related to Kayla so poor Nurse Shelly probably thought she had no choice but to be verbally assaulted by the strange man with the eye-patch. I know we aren’t supposed to think about the extras feelings but I couldn’t help it.

Damn – Anne Milbauer should have been still employed at the hospital for this storyline. She would have added some spark to it for sure. Hopefully Ron has plans for Anne, she has such potential as a fully-realized character rather than the one-note she’s been given to sing for years.

  3. UnderYourWing Says:

    where DID Anne go?

I think we saw her… last week? The week before? I liked the idea of placing her at the Spectator, but with it having no office or actual story, it’s kind of pointless.

Agree on everything, especially the S&K-related stuff. This story could be really great I think if they took Steve’s role down a couple hundred notches. Kayla did just have brain surgery or something either this year or last year, is it such a crazy stretch that she may have lasting effects? It would be much more compelling (I think) to watch her really question her competence and slowly lose her confidence in herself in this career where she has been very successful, and then after lots of soul-searching ultimately make the very public announcement that she is giving up medicine as she can no longer responsibly practice – only to find out THEN that she was set up and now has to decide how to redeem her professional reputation (and would also be centered on her rather than Steve, which I feel this has become). I’m going to give this one a pass and chalk it up to the writing transition, but it has felt recently like we are getting more and more story reveals/wrap-ups too early instead of giving them the slow build and then the big soapy blowup.

    • mykleraus Says:

That’s a really great point about Kayla’s brain surgery from last year. That whole thing was so random (and also lost in the shuffle of the LAST writing transition) that it would’ve been nice to grant it a little more weight, and it would’ve given her more of a POV on this entire thing.

I continue to be underwhelmed by the lack of great climaxes to stories over the past few years. It’s like they’re scared to milk these setups for all they’re worth.

  5. Dino Says:

Gabi looks good in anything. She is a gem with a long career ahead.

    • mykleraus Says:

Oh, she’s gorgeous. She can manage to look good in just about anything, but they make such strange choices considering her character is supposed to be the single mother of a toddler living in the Midwest. They’ve had her dressed like she’s about to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards *way* too often for a woman who has a young child and spends 50% of her time recovering from kidnappings/near-death experiences/etc.

      • Damon L. Jacobs Says:

The dress looks so good it seems it’s the only thing they’re going to let her wear for the rest of the month

      • mykleraus Says:

LOL! For real. This is one of the longer Salem days/nights in recent memory. Though you wouldn’t know it was nighttime based on how well lit The Bench area is…

  6. ADW Says:

Why do the projected text messages always look like the screen of an early 1980s Apple IIe? More shirtless Trip, please AND Eli next. Nobody got “naked” on the island except for Chad and Gabi when they did it right in the open; I believe those cavern-like structures or behind some plants would have provided them more privacy as well as less awkwardness in the morning when JJ and Lani found them.
I agree, its ridiculous that they didn’t have Nurse Shelley in more scenes in midst of Steve’s investigation. Contrarily, do we really want to see more of her than the bare minimum? After all, Nurse Shelly is always such an irritable shrew.

    • mykleraus Says:

Ha! Marlena’s phone with the two buttons for John’s call was very 1988.

There’s absolutely been an increase in shiftlessness, and I, for one, am not complaining. It’s a little thing that goes so far!
