An Antiquated Proposal

Nothing says 2017 like a man running around to ask not one, not two, but three other men for permission to propose to his girlfriend, a 50-year-old mother, grandmother, and (corrupt) police detective!

This week on The Handmaid’s Tale Days of Our Lives, Rafe was about to propose to Hope when her stepmother/half-sister (which is a whole other bag of crazy that we aren’t going to spend time unpacking here) warned him that he really should speak to her father first, and then said father insisted that Rafe go check with Victor, Hope’s former father-in-law, and then he somehow wound up seeking approval from Roman, her former brother-in-law. Is he trying to marry an adult woman or buy a prize cow?

Look, I get that they wanted to gin up some tension in a pairing where there really isn’t any — which is part of the problem with Hope/Rafe, who would work as a pleasant supporting couple but not as this passionate love story they’re trying to sell — but this felt so tonally old-fashioned and goofy. Hope has been married multiple times and is not 21 years old. Some of the actual interactions were well done, like Victor comparing Rafe’s position with regards to Hope/Bo to his own with Maggie/Mickey, and Roman telling Rafe that it really wasn’t up to him, and that kind of stuff. But I wish they’d gone with something more modern, like Hope declining the proposal not because she doesn’t love him, but because she’s been there and done that, and Rafe then having to decide whether he’s okay not getting married and not having children if it means being with her. They’re never going to be Bo and Hope 2.0, but there could be ways to write this as a fairly fresh character story and not Cookie-Cutter Soap Romance.

I still hate that they did that. Wouldn’t Bo have asked, like, Steve or John or someone before RAFE? And Rafe shouldn’t need anyone’s permission but Hope’s, right?!
