Supporting Character Returning This Fall?

I did not expect this news, but now that it’s coming out, it… makes total sense.

William Utay, who portrayed DiMera henchman Dr. Wilhelm Rolf from 1997-2003 and again in 2007-08, is apparently headed back to Salem. Nothing confirmed officially yet, but there have been a number of clues on social media, and Jason47 weighed in on the speculation with the following (normally I wouldn’t post the entire blurb from another source, but his site itself doesn’t do permalinks and I want to make sure people can see it all while still giving credit):

In recent weeks, an audition video posted on Vimeo said that around Halloween, Salemites are looking for a doctor who was said to bring people back from the dead. More recently, a video posted from the set had someone calling an actor named William to set. In a video seen today on Instagram, a balding man in a lab coat could briefly be seen on the monitor. Could William Utay, who took a long break from acting until his recent appearance on “Modern Family” in February, be on his way back as the dastardly Dr. Rolf?? As the magic 8 ball says, all signs seem to be pointing to yes.

If you think about it for two seconds, it really does fit. We know Will is being resurrected. And Ron Carlivati loves those sort of over-the-top camp elements. On top of the clues above, I’d totally buy it. And as tired as I am of the “the DiMeras did it!” retcons, there are a few dumb story moves — Will’s murder chief among them — that need undoing. Might as well make it fun.

I hope Dr. Rolf is returning. He was always fun to watch. He’d be the perfect one to use to explain Will’s return.

They’re going to have to pull something silly to explain it anyway, so might as well just go with this and get it over with. The actor always seemed to relish playing the part, and he’s a character who makes sense being ridiculous, so I’m fine with this.

I don’t mind campy, when it starts bordering on cartoon is when I have a problem. This character teeters on that edge for me. I think I can handle it as long as he’s not long term.

Dr. Rolf cracked me up! I’m honestly not familar with RC’s work. Some of the bizzare material on tap makes we wonder if James E. Reilly is umm “ghost writing” (bad pun) for Days.

RC definitely loves the camp, but he can also do some really classically melodramatic soapy stuff. I’m optimistic that he’ll be the right fit for Days.
