Actress Returns for Limited Run
This one has me excited. I have a feeling you’re either gonna love it or hate it…
Alison Sweeney, who portrayed Sami Brady from 1993 until 2014 and again for a short time in the fall of 2015, is headed back to Salem! Per Deadline Hollywood:
[She] confirmed via her Instagram that she is reprising her role on the hit NBC soap opera Days of Our Lives. “I have big news to share. I’m coming back to Days,” she revealed on Monday.
You can check out the short video she posted announcing her return at the link above. Soap Opera Digest further adds that Sweeney will film Sami’s latest appearance in Salem during May and June, and they’re referring to it as “an extended visit.” Considering the shooting schedule, this means she’ll likely air in October and November.
Ever since she announced that she was leaving the show, Sweeney has said that she’d love to come back for visits, time permitting, and she made it work for the 50th anniversary, so I can’t say I’m shocked by this — but I do think it’s a needed shot in the arm for Days. She’s for sure some of the biggest star power at their disposal right now, especially in terms of the under-50 crowd, and she has a major fanbase. Sami became something of a show-eater during her last years, and several writing regimes leaned way too heavily on her (and on her pairings with EJ and Rafe) in the absence of other viable 30-something female leads. This sounds like it’ll be something more substantial than her return for the 50th, which gave us some excellent scenes surrounding Will’s death and some really perplexing, open-ended material about the possibility of EJ being alive. This gives them the opportunity to tie up some loose ends — and, fingers crossed, revive Will in some way, thereby undoing one of the biggest mistakes the show has made in recent years as far as squandering its next generation of leads.
Is it the fall yet?
