If you follow behind-the-scenes happenings at all, this one is definitely not a surprise, but I’m pleased by it…

What Happened in Salem: Week of April 4th

April 10, 2016

The medical maladies and assorted tragedies continued this week…

After a confrontation with Deimos, Victor suffered a heart attack, and Deimos went upstairs to take a ride on the Green Streak Express (Kate). Nicole, who had left her tablet behind, walked right back into the mansion without so much as ringing the doorbell, and she found Victor in time to call 911 and save him. Kate, who an hour earlier had been aroused to learn that Deimos drugged an innocent woman, walked out on him after discovering he’d left Victor to die.

Feel the Burn

April 10, 2016

Abigail, I know you aren’t exactly in your right mind at the moment, but I feel like there might’ve been other ways to come at this.

Like tying Ben up and getting the hell out of the house. Like calling the police (or your brother, who remains very committed to that Halloween costume of his). Like getting your baby out of the house before you burn the damn place down. I do appreciate the commitment and the intensity, though.

They’re really giving Kate Mansi material she can sink her teeth into, and they’ve managed to elevate Abigail into leading-lady status, which is no small feat. Whoever steps into the role next is going to have meaty history to play.

Also getting interesting character material? Steve and Kayla.

I liked that they pulled a flip by having Kayla upset at Steve’s glib reaction to the charges being dropped, even as what made her realize she loves him is the fact that he was willing to sacrifice himself for Joey. And it makes sense — Steve’s penchant for danger has invited a lot of craziness into their lives. Kayla has always been one to roll up her sleeves and get her hands dirty, but she doesn’t seek that kind of thing out; the fact that Steve does probably has a lot to do with his chaotic upbringing. I thought the Two Steves device was sort of interesting, and it at least minimized the presence of that “Tina” character (who I swear looks familiar from somewhere).

But I have a question here: isn’t the sort of thing Tina was asking him to do Steve’s job? She wasn’t requesting that he recklessly go hurl himself into danger. PIs have to, you know, do stuff sometimes. So I’m not sure how they resolve this, besides Steve becoming a house-husband or getting a job at the Pub.

Dead Wrong

April 7, 2016

Half-serious question: why doesn’t Hope just kill Chase herself, or hand Ciara a gun and give her the go-ahead? Everyone else is getting away with murder!

Steve and Kayla have truly gotten some of the better latter-day supercouple writing I can remember, but this Ava storyline resulting in Joey being a murderer and federal authorities stepping in to get Steve off the hook is absolutely nuts. I did like how they played the fallout of what Joey did with both Steve/Kayla and Joey/Jade (BTW, has Jade been giving anyone some serious Tamara Braun vibes?), but overall, I’m really thrown by what the hell we’re supposed to be taking away from this material.

I’m also thrown by whatever that website Deimos was using to look up information on Nicole Walker, of the Athens Walkers.

Does Salem just have its own Wikipedia for residents? That is insanely thorough! It even lists her sister’s one-time last name (Raines). Is there a page like this about me out there somewhere? (If so, I presume it says Notable Romances: Cheese.) But for real: who is the audience for this? Who compiles it? I must know!

This entire twist of Misty Circle, of the Mykonos Circles, looking just like the late Helena is also bonkers. Victor married the damn woman and never mentioned that she’s a doppelgänger for his dead love? That seems like the sort of thing you’d bring up.

They’ve given both Nicole and Theresa some really lovely scenes with Maggie, which I’ve enjoyed. But it’s cracking me up how Victor was like, “Nicole, you saved my life!” She kind of owes you for the time she had you killed, no?!

Casting Call for Classic Role

April 4, 2016

This is one of the more out-there casting notices we’ve seen in a while, but I’m all about it.

Scarlet Takes a Tumble

April 4, 2016

That sure was a well timed plan Deimos had, huh?

Screen Shot 2016-03-31 at 1.38.43 PM

What if Maggie had had her near-fatal fainting spell while she and Victor were in the car, or in bed at night, or anyplace else Deimos wouldn’t have just been able to appear out of the mist and make his proposal to Victor? How in the hell could he know that she had “five minutes to live”? I know, I know — don’t think about it. But I can’t help it. And I can’t imagine a universe in which that contract Victor signed would have any legal viability whatsoever. He signed it under duress and without witnesses, and Deimos confessed to attempted murder to get it! It’ll be ridiculous if Victor can’t have that voided, which of course he won’t because it’s Days.

Mechanics aside, I don’t hate the ideas of stripping Victor of his wealth and of returning to the story of Maggie’s paralysis. They’re both pretty integral elements of the characters, so assuming the writing digs in and mines that — which is a big, generous assumption, I know — these could be fruitful setups.

It’s too bad Summer already swiped that red-shoe charm from Maggie, though. That fall gave me flashbacks to Fay Walker’s tumble down the stairs at the DiMera mansion, and the only thing that could recall that more would be a crazed daughter running around town squawking at everyone about a piece of her mother’s jewelry. I hope everyone caught and appreciated that sequence earlier this week in which Summer fondled the charm while having a flashback to fondling the charm. Can’t-miss TV, for sure.

What Happened in Salem: Week of March 28th

April 2, 2016

Mansions were not a great place to live in Salem this past week…

Maggie continued stumbling and fainting all over town, including at the party that Brady and Theresa threw to announce their engagement. After Maggie was deemed okay, Victor was free to go back to carping about how much he hates Theresa, while John — a man she literally almost murdered — decided to be supportive of the announcement. In all fairness, Theresa’s single murder attempt pales in comparison to the rap sheet of Brady’s last fiancée, so hooray for John for keeping things in perspective.
