Actress (Probably) Leaving

There are rumors swirling and a new casting call out, which suggest that a certain actress is departing Salem in the next few months…

Kate Mansi (Abigail Deveraux) is said to be leaving the show when her contract expires in December. And this casting call, published by Soap Opera Digest, indicates that they plan to recast:

“Val” is a gorgeous, 25-year-old Caucasian female, who is described as “passionate, intelligent and sensitive. Val blows into town in a whirlwind… She appears successful on the outside, a girl who seems to have it all but … at times she has a fragility and [vulnerability] that gives us the feeling of a painful past that she desperately wants to keep secret.” The role will start taping in mid-to-late December, so expect the character to air next May.

I mean, who knows? They make it sound like a new character — or, like, every single woman in her 20s and 30s who has arrived in Salem in the past eight years — but the timing lines up. Frankly, they would be crazy not to recast Abigail. Especially with the loss of Will, she’s too vital to the younger set to lose. But a lot hinges on finding the right recast, particularly one who has chemistry with Billy Flynn. It’s a shame that they’ve had Mansi onscreen for nearly five years and only, in the last six months, have really found the story to utilize her properly as a driving force of the next generation.

I suppose they could have Ben finally kill Abby, or she could die giving birth, etc., but where does that leave Chad? I think that if KM IS really leaving they have no choice but to re-cast. I think killing another young legacy character would be a big mistake. My only concern is that they do some serious testing with any new actress to make sure she has chem w/Billy Flynn, who is way too good to waste on a poor pairing.

They HAVE to recast. This is why it was stupid to kill Will. You need to have legacy characters waiting in the wings to shore up storyline when an actor leaves or something happens. They do also have Stephanie and Chelsea waiting in the wings, if they choose to bring someone back…

I agree about Billy Flynn. They need to make it a priority to cast someone who jives well with him, or the last year of Chad/Abigail build has been for nothing.

I think Ben killing Abbie would make sense especially if she leaves him, “if I can’t have you nobody can!” Otherwise, I feel like Abigail will lose the baby. If not, he/she will have serious health problems and need a donor of some sort which will be the prelude to finding out Chad is the baby Daddy.
I’m kind of hoping that the focus will be shifted to other Horton legacies because I’m tired of Jennifer and her kids. It seems that will be the case as Ciara is being eased in. What about Maggie’s other daughter, Sarah? What about Tommy Jr’s daughter did she ever end up breeding offscreen? Mike could have other kids out there besides that doofus Jeremy.

I really don’t want them to kill her. Especially this soon after Will’s death, killing another young Horton (plus Nick) would be a huge mistake. If they can’t recast, she can just as easily survive Ben’s craziness and head to Europe for a reset for a few years, you know?

Having Shawn and Ciara around will help shore up the Hortons. They could sort of bring Jeremy back as whomever they wanted, if they wanted to have him. Same with Nathan, actually. Sandy Horton never had a kid that we heard of, but they could give her the one the same way they invented one for Jessica Fallon (Nick’s mom).

It took me awhile to warm up to Kate Mansi, but now I really like her as Abigail!! I don’t want to see her go. 😦

IF KM leaves it wouldn’t surprise me, a majority younger actors (under 35) these days don’t seem to stick around on soaps for the long haul; I think 4 years is about average before a character goes off the canvas and/or is recast.
I never cared much for the character of Abigail; I wouldn’t cry if she leaves on a plane, train, automobile, or even a body bag. To be honest, I liked Ashley Benson more in the role (aside from the fact she wasn’t shoved in my face as much) but, she moved on to roles with more notoriety…I’m hoping IF they end up recasting Abigail they give her a personality overhaul as they did the 7 or 8 times Will was recast. I would like to see her be less naive and less of a sanctimonious hypocrite. I would like Abigail have more funny, snarky lines like Nicole and Theresa.

I’ve liked Mansi since she began, but it’s taken a while for them to even figure out who Abigail is. They’ve alternately had her be kind of a judgy prude and a clingy nutjob. I think the good thing about this whole Ben arc is they’ll be able to move Abigail forward — maybe as someone more cynical, or someone fighting that cynicism, or something.
