EJ DiMera Lives!

Okay, not really. Well, probably really, but not yet, at least not on the actual show. Friend of the blog Aaron alerted me to this segment from Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, in which — in the course of discussing the refugee situation in Europe — he wound up on the topic of Days. Per We Love Soaps:

Oliver had a wonderful surprise for 16-year old refugee Nageen Mustafa, who traveled from her home in the war-torn Syrian town of Kobani to the Serbian border with Hungary. Bound to a wheel chair, the obstacles she has faced are unimaginable, and yet she is endlessly optimistic. Mustafa said in a recent interview that she taught herself English by watching American soap opera Days of our Lives, but was sad that the character of EJ DiMera (James Scott) had been killed off the show because EJ and Sami Brady (Alison Sweeney) were her favorite couple.

To brighten Mustafa’s day, in some small way, Oliver reunited EJ and Sami in a special scene created just for the show.

It’s a sweet surprise, and it was kind of Oliver, Sweeney, and Scott to do it. Totally cornball, but I’m sure plenty of EJami fans will be thrilled for the chance to see their couple onscreen together one more time. It’s remarkable how well Scott slips back into being EJ, whom he hasn’t played for like a year and a half, and also that EJ put on a damn suit to escape captivity and rush back to his beloved.

You can watch the segment (all of which is pretty compelling) below. The Days-related material begins right around the 13:00 mark.

Poor girl. I can’t imagine the horrors she’s seen. I taught myself English watching Days with my mom all the way from Denmark. It was one of the things that bonded the family. We would always watch Days together.

Oh, wow! That’s incredible. What a special association to have with the show. I just hope it hasn’t predisposed you to talking about THE TAPE or anything an excessive amount… 🙂

What ever happened to The Coat? I stopped watching for a while after that. I’m back now as the show has gotten good again!

Nothing! After all those months of people staring at and sniffing and flashing back to that damn leather jacket that they kept calling a coat, it was a total dead-end. Paige found out about JJ and Eve by overhearing them, and that was that. I think she had some throwaway line about, “You were wearing the brown coat! I saw it there!” and then no one ever mentioned it again.

My mom always loved Days. I remember her watching it for as long as I’ve been alive. But the family really got hooked during the Salem Stalker. I’m the only one who still watches the show. My mom quit in 2009 because she didn’t recognize her show, and didn’t care about anyone anymore.

      • mykleraus Says:

Awwww. It’s such a shame when people fall out of it because it becomes unfamiliar. The same thing happened with my grandma.

Clip didn’t work in Australia, but fortunately I found Last Week Tonight with John Oliver on local cable. A very inspiring story, and an extraordinary showing from our beloved Days stars
