Even A Broken Clock is INSANE Twice a Day

Can someone please explain to me, in the name of the good and holy Daniel Jonas, what the FUCK time it’s supposed to be in Salem?!

At the beginning of Wednesday’s episode, we found Abigail and Ben like this–

–which looks rather like nighttime, no? But then, later in the episode, they got up, got dressed, and went to Club TBD to eat a meal. Roman clearly (well, not clearly, but I managed to decipher it) stated that Paige was killed “tonight,” and various confrontations by that foliage-surrounded bench were lit like it was maybe sunset. Meanwhile, Kayla’s still at work at the hospital — which, she’s a doctor and Chief of Staff, so that could totally happen at night — and Eve shows up at the hospital because she “had an appointment.” Unless she was checking her crazy ass into the damn psych ward… what?! My only explanation is that Salem is once again located in the JERST time zone — that’s James E. Reilly Standard Time — because I haven’t seen such clock-related fuckery since he was at the helm.

    Tomsell were offenders too.

For all the love the production values are getting, I think the show looks fairly awful. I had the same issue during Noel Maxam’s raved about run. Are people watching in HD? Because the show looks washed out and inconsistent in SD. And I’m already bored of the light through windows look.

The other time element that bothers me is how inbetween scene time is inconsistent. Ben and Abigail will leave their studio go to Club TBD and be strolling in the park while Kayla and Steve fight in the office for the entire episode.

It definitely looks better in HD. (Actually, I think they light and shoot for HD now, which might explain why SD isn’t optimized…) I’m over the light-through-the-blinds thing. It’s very film school. Mostly I’m just glad we are getting NIGHT now. For a lot of TomSell’s run, it was always daytime and everything was so damn bright, in that really sitcom-y way. Shadows make a huge difference.

I’m finding myself really confused by the passage of time, too. I guess that’s par for the course with Days, but of late it’s been really glaring.

I was so confused about what day it was supposed to be. I don’t know if we are looking at a return of JER’s monthdays, or if this is just them having to pack a lot in with the transitions of stories.

I haven’t watched today’s episode yet, but I hear that 45 minutes into the episode, it’s suddenly the next morning. HA!

That switch to morning was bizarre. And also sort of unnecessary?

      • marypickford Says:

They needed it for Nicole’s offer to Eric, perhaps, so he could be sober. Of course they could have picked it up next week, but my theory is that they are having to pack a lot in with the stories changing.

It’s just so funny that it was the same day all week and then suddenly the next day the last 15 minutes of Friday’s show.

SO weird. I was glad we got that Eric/Nicole bit, though. It makes me feel like they aren’t moving away from them and are just biding their time until they can use Basic Black as the playing ground for the next step.

speaking of time…..why, in all the time teresa has been on this show, have we never, once, ever—- seen her with a sketchbook? and now, all of a sudden she is a master fashion artist!! i could go on with the weirdnesses, but…why bother….logic,….(in salem), thou art a non existent concept…..

    • mykleraus Says:

I know. I’m choosing to just go with it as one of those giant leaps needed to get worthwhile story in motion, but it definitely could’ve been integrated better (see her sketching and then quickly putting away a book when someone comes into the room, etc).

Interesting that you bring that up. I thought it day time based upon everything else going on at the time. I figured Ben worked late the bar and was sleeping in. Abbie was *ahem* “sick” and called out of work. Ben likely thumbtacked blankets over the windows to block out the sunlight. Something is really amiss because Nicole seemed to wear that same hideous pink/blue dress for excessive amount of time.
