42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Nominations
This week, the nominations for the 42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards — a strange ritual in which your favorite and not-so-favorite personalities from daytime drama, talk shows, game shows, and the like are herded into your Aunt Wendy’s basement and degraded while a dog runs around with a GoPro camera on its head desperately trying to escape — were announced. This year’s ceremony, to be held on Sunday, April 26, will be a step up from last year’s online disaster in that it will be airing on something called “Pop TV,” which I think used to be the TV Guide Channel and is at least shown on actual televisions.
You can view the full list of nominees here, but as far as this blog is concerned, here are the relevant categories for Days…
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Peggy McCay as Caroline Brady (Days of Our Lives)
Alison Sweeney as Sami Brady DiMera (Days)
Gina Tognoni as Phyllis Newman (The Young and the Restless)
Maura West as Ava Jerome (General Hospital)
Laura Wright as Carly Corinthos (GH)
Outstanding Younger Actress in a Drama Series
Kristen Alderson as Kiki Jerome (GH)
Camila Banus as Gabi Hernandez (Days)
Hunter King as Summer Newman (Y&R)
Haley Pullos as Molly Lansing Davis (GH)
Outstanding Younger Actor in a Drama Series
Bryan Craig as Morgan Corinthos (GH)
Max Ehrich as Fenmore Baldwin (Y&R)
Tequan Richmond as TJ Ashford (GH)
Freddie Smith as Sonny Kiriakis (Days)
Since there are only four soaps left, Days is also automatically up for Outstanding Writing Team, Outstanding Directing Team, and Outstanding Daytime Drama Series.
Believe it or not, this is Alison Sweeney’s first nomination ever, and she played Sami from 1992 until this past fall! Given that she is such a high-profile star and wrapped up her run in a pretty visible way — not to mention that she had a lot of strong material last year — I’d reckon that her odds of taking home the Emmy after strong. I’m sure Peggy McCay, who was also nominated for Lead Actress last year, submitted the episode of Will and Sonny’s wedding, where she gave that moving speech, but I can’t really see her winning over Sweeney or any of the others. I have my fingers crossed for Camila Banus, who did very strong work during her last few months on Days, and Freddie Smith could stand a good chance considering that none of the other nominees in his category are real powerhouses. Then again, who knows?
