Casting: All Your Womenz are Belong to Salem

Two female arrivals coming up — one a return, one a new actress, and both appearing before the end of 2014, which is nothing short of miraculous considering they’re so far ahead in filming that they’ve probably filmed Christmas 2017 already.

Behind the cut in case you prefer to be totally unspoiled…

This has been rumored/known for a while now, but it’s finally official: according to Jason47, Molly Burnett brings Melanie Layton Jonas back to Salem during November sweeps. Melanie has to be one of the most divisive characters in recent Days history — people either love her or haaaaate her — and I come down on the side of loving her. Burnett just has a certain offbeat charm that really set her apart from the Generic Young Heroine this show tends to love to push, and I’m excited to see what they have in store for her. I’m sure they will have her mixing it up with Abigail, Ben, and the new Chad, but I mostly hope they restore her edge and don’t simply make her another member of the Daniel Jonas Spirit Squad.

Also arriving this year — on December 5th, per TV Line — is One Life to Live alum Melissa Archer. The report is that she’s playing a character named Serena, who has “ties to someone in Salem,” but there are two theories floating around online:

  • That she’s a recast Sami Brady. Archer’s OLTL character, Natalie, started out as a Sami-esque schemer with a heart, who got transformed into more of a traditional heroine and was involved in several couplings that grew rabid/crazed online fan bases. Alison Sweeney and the show have said that they’re leaving the door open for AS to return as Sami for special occasions, and I actually believe they’re being honest, but Archer wouldn’t be a terrible fit for the role (though recasting, especially this soon, would be idiotic, in my opinion), and the fact that Sami’s hair got darker in recent months could be a clue that they were hoping to ease a transition.
  • That she’s really playing Sarah Horton, the daughter of Maggie and Neil Curtis. They’ve mentioned Sarah more than usual lately; on Thursday’s show, Maggie talked to Daniel about “your sister” and again referenced how Eve ran her over long ago. The character hasn’t been seen since the early 90s, when she was a teen, so she’s essentially a blank slate, and it does make a lot of sense that they’d cast a redhead as Maggie’s biological daughter. Bonus for me: they couldn’t try her as another love interest for Daniel!

Two more gingers in Salem, that’s a grand total of three 🙂

I agree, I hope Melaine returning won’t mean we will see more of Dr. Dan or hear about his “awesomeness.”

I have no clue who this Sarena person is. Maybe Aiden’s ex-wife lived after all? Sarah Horton makes sense to me as well especially if she heard Eve was back in town and wants revenge.

  2. Farah Says:

I hope she’s Sarah. That means she’s not related to everyone on the show. And as you stated, no Dr. Tan for her. Besides Eric needs a new love interest.

She could be with Eric, Brady, Rafe’s dull ass… technically even Lucas!

      • Farah Says:

The fact that Rafe hasn’t left with the rest of his useless family continues to annoy me. (although will always have a spot for Original Ariana EJariana forever!)

      • mykleraus Says:

I don’t even MIND Rafe as a supporting character, but he’s just so… there. I can’t believe they tried to hinge an entire new set of characters on him. I’m fine with him being around in cop mode, but he and Lucas should be switched in terms of prominence!

Please let her be Sarah Horton. This would give the wonderful Suzanne Rogers something to do besides worrying about Daniel and making up with Victor. The mother/daughter relationship is filled with so much drama. Most mothers treat their sons as gods – boring. Plus, I am sure Sarah has some unresolved Neil Curtis issues.

There’s also interesting potential with Sarah being envious of Maggie’s bond with Melanie and/or Daniel (I don’t want Sarah to become the villain trying to tear Maggie from her precious Daniel, but if handled fairly, it could be something interesting to touch on).
