Blessings and Sins

Some matches made in Heaven:

I was hoping Theresa and Anne would instantly bond over their Jennifer-hate, but I’m sure that’s to come. Meanwhile, Lucas and JJ were awesome with their shared moment of Daniel-loathing. (Bryan Dattilo made an amazing face when JJ asked what he thinks of Daniel.) I wish JJ would get out of his own way, though. Just behave for one day. One day! I’m starting to think what he needs isn’t a grounding so much as rehab.

Something not made in Heaven, despite the church setting:

I don’t love it to begin with — there’s something a little Sochi 2014 Free Dance about it — but that aside, it’s so inappropriate. Knock it off, Misty Circle. This isn’t Tabernacle Lolita. Put on some pants.

This might work as a palette cleanser, though.

How great does Kristian Alfonso look? (And I sort of love that top, despite it being a little Ladies’ Soccer Uniform.) If Bo isn’t going to get his dumb ass home and hit that, will someone else step up to the plate? Vargas?

If Bo doesn’t come back (maybe even if he does) I could support Hope/Vargas. It would kind of mirror Maggie/Victor relationship — and Maggie could give Hope a hard time about dating a reformed criminal as Hope did when she wanted Maggie out of Victor’s house. I miss Victor & Maggie but I guess that boat has sailed. Oh, and Vargas needs a first name.

I wish Hope/Vargas had been pursued more before the climax of the Nick/Gabi/Will story. It seems like they lost a bit of momentum with Vargas since then, and now they’re trying to keep it alive or restart it with the recent scenes between him and Nick. The cop/criminal dynamic could be really fun.

  2. Bryan Dattilo brings his all in every scene. I resent that Lucas can’t be as prominent as Daniel and Rafe. IMO, he’s more interesting and integral to the show.

I cannot believe we are coming up on the one year anniversary of Anne’s first appearance. The show really has made an effective use of the supporting cast. I still want an Anne / Lucas pairing because I think it would give them both something to do when they aren’t being seen. Anne and Theresa have been fun.

I would love to see Julie’s reaction to a Hope / Vargas pairing since Vargas / Nick are essentially the Doug / Bill of this generation.

You’ve addressed my issue with J.J. It’s hard to feel sympathy for the kid when he is his own worst enemy. It isn’t like he has been falsely accused of doing anything (drug dealing, slashing tires, stealing prescription pads with the intent to sell, stealing from the electronics store, skipping class, seducing women who are vaguely older than him). Even when he seems genuine about his family, he tends to be using it as an excuse to get what he wants. There have been too few and far between moments where I really feel J.J. is messed up and the kid is on a lot for a younger cast member.

I wonder if Nicole’s inappropriateness is a conscious decision on the part of the costume designers to reflect Nicole’s not-so-hidden desire for Eric. For a while there, she was dressing very demure, but now they have her back in the short dresses. When I was at a DAYS fan event last year, someone asked Lauren Koslow why Kate always dressed like a hot mess with the many pieces of flair. Koslow, who studied fashion design, said she made sure the character was less fashionable for a period to reflect how messed up Kate’s life was. She said it didn’t make sense for Kate to look good when her life was falling apart.

    Great entry, as usual.

I hadn’t made that connection between Doug/Bill and Vargas/Nick, but it’s so accurate. More reason to pursue a Hope/Vargas connection of some kind, for sure.

I’m getting more and more onboard with Lucas and Anne. They could be a fun comic relief couple.

I like your theory about Nicole’s wardrobe, but I tend to think it’s just the wardrobe people making inappropriate choices. Everyone’s always showing up to work in cocktail dresses and strapless things and God-knows-what-else. Strangely, Jennifer is one of the best-dressed women all of a sudden. She has been rocking some great dresses lately. It’s quite a turnaround from what a disaster she was even a few months ago.

It’s interesting to see how they dress people on the show. I remember reading how shows transitioned to color they had to deal with the color contrast of the sets and clothes because what looked good in b&w didn’t look good in color. Granted, DAYS never had that issue, but I do think it is an issue now. I think Nicole’s outfit might not look so garish on the blue office set, while Hope’s orange would compliment the rectory’s color scheme nicely.

The fact that you can just write “the blue office set” and be referring to like ten different locations is problematic. 🙂
